Good employers

We’re all aware of the number of people who have lost jobs during the pandemic. It will be quite a while before peoples’ personal levels of income reach what they were six months ago. There are businesses which pre-emptively fired people. Then there are businesses which tried to retain as many employees as possible for as long as they could. This cafe had more servers than customers, something which annoyed me, until The Family pointed out that they probably haven’t fired anyone yet. That changed my perspective. This business is only a stand-in for those uncounted, unseen employers who kept paying their employees as long as they could. Some shut down, some will continue until the economy gets back on its feet again. They all tried their best.

I travel on work. When that gets too tiring then I relax by travelling for holidays. The holidays are pretty hectic, so I need to unwind by getting back home. But that means work.

  1. I had lunch with a doctor yesterday. One of the sad side-effects but rarely reported in the U.S. press – is that elderly in assisted-living and nursing homes are not seeing their families. There is an emotional loss. They also need family memories to monitor their needs. They are not getting to the doctor with other problems until they get so severe they are hospitalized. And many are dying, not from COVID-19, but from other treatable causes.

    1. I believe that is true for many other places. I’ve hear reports of postponed visits to eye, dental, even cardiac specialists. Part of the reason is that the specialists are seeing less people now, because they don’t want more than a certain number of people waiting in the offices. But it is also because people are putting off consulting doctors until very late, as you mention.
